This course is inspired by one of the weekly conversations hosted at Q Ideas (www.qideas.org). They curated the video presentations which became the core of this very important Thinker Education course on the subject of corporate profit-making and the role of profit in human flourishing. The rising generation is re-defining this conversation, as they are so many other conversations. Q is among the nation’s best hosts of conversation for those who want to “Stay Curious, Think Well, and Advance the Common Good.”
Human nature feels the continuous pull of two inherent urges. The first is the pull of self-interest. Self-interest is at the heart of Capitalism. The motivation to seek my own best interests will always bring out the best of my creativity and energy to meet the goals I set. But the competing urge is often just as real and just as powerful, especially in those with a strong sense of morality. It is the urge to be compassionate toward those in need. This is the urge that has caused many wealthy capitalists to invest much of their wealth in helping the less fortunate. In this course experience we will explore the simple question of whether these two urges can be tied together to produce great help for those in need. Can corporate profits, wrought by the principles of capitalism, help local communities thrive with compassion and creativity?
